The Pillow Academy girls soccer team opened its season with a 4-0 shutout over archrival Washington School Wednesday at PA’s Chazzy Moor Field.
The Lady Mustangs, under the direction of first-year head coach Amy Coleman, did just what they were supposed to do — dominate a team they are simply better than.
Coleman expects big things from her squad this season, and she will find out Tuesday more about her team when perennial powerhouse Jackson Academy comes to town.
“This was a great way to open the season, but things will get much tougher next week,” Coleman said. “We scrimmaged JA this summer and know they have a real aggressive, speedy midfield. We will see how we do against a little higher-pressure team. I think our girls will be up to the challenge, though.”
Against Washington, sophomore Catherine Grace Lary provided the bulk of the offense for PA, scoring three goals. Her first came at the 10:46 mark of the first half, but that was all the scoring for PA in the first 40 minutes.
Lary added her second goal 15 minutes into the second half and notched her third eight minutes later.
PA senior Adair Brock had one assist, and junior Analise Bush closed out the scoring with 8:21 to play on a header off a corner kick from sophomore Claire Coleman.
“A lot of our girls are playing new positions in a new formation. Under the circumstances, they did an amazing job,” Coleman said. “They controlled the game the way I expected them too.”
Sophomore goalkeeper Jane Rob Pannell had two saves.
“Our back line did a great job staying together and communicating. It was a great job all together defensively,” said the PA coach.
