Rick Comegy likes what he’s seen so far, but the Mississippi Valley Sate coach knows his football team still has a long way to go.
“I have liked the effort of our guys. We’ve got a lot of young guys, not many who started last year,” said the first-year Valley head coach.
“Our biggest thing this spring was getting out here and just seeing what kind of players we have to work with. We knew coming in we had to roll our sleves up and go to work, but we’ve got some guys who can run, catch and hit. Once we recruit more guys like that, you can expect to see significant changes.”
Comegy was hired early this year to replace Karl Morgan, who was fired after compiling an 8-35 record in four years. MVSU hasn’t had a winning season since 2006.
Fans can get a look at the Delta Devils Saturday at 1 p.m. during an intrasquad scrimmage at Rice-Totten Stadium in Itta Bena.
Admission to the game is free. The MVSU band and cheerleaders will also be performing at the event.
“I think there’s a lot of will to win with our guys,” said Comegy. “They want to win. I think they’re hunger to win supercedes anything else about them. There’s a big hunger to get on top and win some football games….I think they want to push the past aside and show what they really can do.
“There is still a lot of teaching left to do, but I like the direction we’re headed.
