Mississippi Delta Community College will get back to action Thursday on the road after having last week’s game ruled a no contest.
The game was halted with 6:21 left to play in the first quarter with Southwest up 14-0 for a lightning delay. After more than an hour-and-a-half delay, the game was called off.
Now the Trojans (1-0) travel to Wesson Thursday to face Copiah-Lincoln, which was ranked No. 3 in the nation before last week’s 46-10 loss to top-ranked East Mississippi.
The Wolves, who dropped to 11th in this week’s poll, are expected to fill the air with the football Thursday since sophomore quarterback Daniel Fitzwater is one of the hottest passers in the state, hitting over 64 percent of his passes and averaging 339 yards per game.
While the Trojan defense will have to play better for the team to get to 2-0, that unit will need some help from the offense, which struggled to break 200 yards total offense in the 21-12 season-opening win over East Central.
In other juco news:
•Mississippi Gulf Coast punter Kevin Phillips of Greenwood hasn’t been called on much in the first two games, but the Pillow Academy product has delivered big time on his three punts.
He leads the state with an average of 47 yards per punt — which ranks third nationally.
In last week’s 63-7 rout of Northwest, the sophomore had a punt travel 55 yards in the air that landed near the goal line and bounced into the end zone for a touchback.
The Bulldogs play at East Central Thursday night at 7 in Decatur.
•Greenwood freshman quarterback Kwadra Griggs of Itawamba has faced two tough defenses in his first two games at the juco level in Jones County and Copiah-Lincoln.
The former Greenwood High School standout completed 19-of-28 passes for 134 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions in a 35-14 loss to Jones. He has completed 27 of 49 passes for 239 yards, two TDs and two interceptions in his first two games.
Itawamba (0-2) opens North Division play Thursday by hosting 1-1 Holmes.
