The Lady Mustangs of Pillow Academy got a team-high 11 points from senior Merritt Belk as they avenged their only loss of the young season.
The PA girls won 43-35 at home Tuesday night over Winston Academy, which defeated the Lady Mustangs 31-27 a week ago in overtime in Louisville.
“It was good to get the win after having to sit on that last game for a week,” said Lady Mustangs coach Durwin Carpenter. “We’ve still got a long way to go because we would play good for a stretch and then not so good for a stretch.”
Winston, coached by former PA assistant Robin Chastain, jumped out to a quick 4-0, but the Lady Mustangs quickly went ahead 5-4 on a putback by Belk. PA never trailed again, but the game was close the rest of the way.
Pillow (4-1) led 16-15 at the end of the first period and 28-24 at the half.
Winston scored the first two points of the second half, but Mary Key Britt quickly gave PA a five-point cushion with one of two 3-pointers in the contest.
Britt finished with eight points. April Leonard added seven points and five rebounds.
Airrin Woolfolk had a team-high six assists and five steals to go with six points.
Abby Bailey recorded a team-best eight rebounds and chipped in with five points.
In the boys game, Pillow got its second blowout win in a week over Winston.
Junior Brantley O’Dell and sophomore Will Jennings had 12 and 10 points, respectively, as the Mustangs cruised to a 54-22 victory to move to 2-0 on the season.
Jennings scored the first nine points of the contest, and then senior Maury Sykes got a steal and a driving layup to make it 11-0.
The Mustangs led 13-5 at the end of the first period and 35-11 at the half.
Sykes added nine points, and senior Tyler McKay chipped in with eight.
In junior high action Tuesday, the PA boys won 60-28 as John Madison Brooks had 14 points, followed by Woods Rose with 13.
The ninth-grade girls beat Winston 23-12 as Kayla Hawkins led the way with 11 points. Adair Brock added eight.
