Greenwood High School’s C.J. Johnson moved to cornerback halfway through last season — a switch that has helped him catch the eye of college recruiters.
Johnson, a rising senior, is one of many 2019 prospects who have yet to fully emerge since this class is loaded with top tier talent. But he is beginning to see his offer sheet grow. The 6-1, 180-pounder has picked up offers from Memphis, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana-Monroe and several FCS programs this spring.
“It was a sigh of relief,” Johnson said, when Memphis became the first BCS program to pull the trigger on an offer.
Louisiana Tech and Louisiana-Monroe soon followed.
“I felt vindicated a little bit. It was exciting,” he said.
Johnson now wants the attention of Mississippi’s two SEC programs.
“My coach told me Ole Miss has asked about me, but I haven’t talked to them yet,” Johnson shared. “I’d like to be invited to camp there this summer.
“I’ve talked to the Mississippi State coaches, and I talked to (head) Coach (Joe) Moorhead. They want me to come there for camp this summer. They told me they liked my tape.”
Johnson is projected to play cornerback on the next level. He moved to the position mid-way through his junior season last fall and recorded five interceptions, including two he returned for touchdowns.
“Ole Miss is telling me they want to get to know me a little better,” Johnson said. “I want to get to know them a little better, too. Mississippi State is showing me love on a weekly basis.”
