Another full field is expected for the third annual Jim Hurley Memorial Golf Tournament set for Sept. 28 at Greenwood Country Club.
Because of the large number of entrants, the four-man scramble will be broken into separate morning and afternoon tournaments. So event organizers encourage anyone interested to sign up now by calling the GCC golf shop at 453-3414.
Hurley was the vice president of research and development for Viking Range Corp., when he died of acute myeloid leukemia at 66 on Jan. 12, 2008. All proceeds from the golf tournament go to the American Cancer Society's leukemia research.
More than $50,000 has been raised for the American Cancer Society in the first two years of the event, which kicks off Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m. with a barbecue dinner at the Viking Training Center on Front St.
Tickets are $15. The Viking cooking team will provide the food. You don't have to be playing in the tournament to purchase dinner tickets.
There will be a raffle for 10 culinary prizes donated by Viking Range at the end of the afternoon round of golf. Tickets are $5.
The entry fee for the golf tournament is $125 per man. That includes one mulligan, three drink tickets, one BBQ dinner ticket and lunch at GCC. A variety of prizes will be awarded on the course for both the morning and afternoon tournaments.
A new car will be part of the hole-in-one prize packages.
"Viking is extremely pleased and proud for Jim Hurley, a dedicated Viking employee for many years who made a major contribution to the early success of Viking, to be memorialized by this tournament," said Dale Persons, a Viking executive. "The overwhelmingly strong support of the Jim Hurley Memorial Golf Tournament by our community, Viking employees, Viking suppliers and other friends of Viking is greatly appreciated by the family of Jim Hurley and by Viking Range Corporation. We are so proud to have raised significant funds in support of leukemia research."
Tournament sponsorships are still available starting at $250.
For more information about the event, call Randy Bensley at GCC at 453-3414 or Persons at 451-4129.
