The Greenwood High School girls and boys basketball teams took home the first-place trophies from the Leflore County Tournament, which finished up Saturday at Mississippi Valley State University.
The Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs both went 3-0 during the three-day tournament, sweeping Amanda Elzy, West Tallahatchie and the host school, which they played Saturday night.
The Lady Bulldogs (6-8) cruised to a 34-6 victory over the Lady Tigers (0-11) as they led 17-0 after the first period, 22-0 at the half and 27-0 after the third frame.
Antwanette Regular, who scored 34 against Elzy and 29 against West Tally, had 10 points and five steals. Amariunna Nichols and Chloe Cooley had seven points each with Cooley also grabbing five rebounds and making two steals. Arieyanna Glover had five points and five steals.
The Bulldogs had no problems with Leflore as they posted an 84-41 victory to improve to 8-6 overall. Greenwood jumped out to a 26-10 lead after the first quarter and outscored the Tigers (2-9) 21-10 in the second frame for a 47-20 advantage at the half. A 27-17 run in the third gave the Bulldogs a commanding 74-37 lead headed to the fourth period.
Zacchaeus Moody paced GHS with 12 points, four steals and four assists. DeAndre Smith and Javardrick Jackson had nine points each. Smith also had three assists.
Montrell Harris, Cordarius Hoskins, Omar Emmons and Quanterius Silas had eight points each with Silas also grabbing five rebounds, and Emmons making three steals.
Kwalique Swinney had 11 points for the Tigers, and Brandon Cleveland and Christopher Bruce had seven points each.
Greenwood entertains Ruleville Tuesday, and Leflore County is at Riverside Tuesday.
n Amanda Elzy: The Lady Panthers and Panthers also pulled off a sweep Saturday as both squads knocked off West Tally in Itta Bena.
The girls pulled away from the Lady Choctaws in the third quarter to claim a 53-42 win to improve to 5-8. Elzy led 14-2 after the first frame, 23-19 at the half and 40-30 after the third period.
Keyara McCline led Elzy with 18 points, while Alexandria Martin had 16 points. My’Shelle Berry tacked on seven points.
The Panthers got an 18-point performance from Reggie Miller as they beat the Choctaws 50-44 to pull even at 7-7 overall. Elzy led 9-8 after the first, 22-14 at the half and 34-24 after the third period.
William Stewart and Devin Donley had seven points each for the Panthers.
In a late game from Friday night, the Panthers topped Leflore County 42-36 as it held leads of 15-10 after the first period, 23-20 at the half and 34-27 after the third.
Miller had 23 points, while Stewart and Isias Collins had six points each.
Bruce led Leflore with 12 points, and Royce Jackson had 11. Kayvon Dixon finished with 10.
Elzy hosts Yazoo County on Dec. 18.
