Greenwood has dominated Region 3-4A for nearly seven years now.
The Bulldogs can put the finishing touches on its seventh straight district championship Friday in their regular-season finale against Yazoo City. The winner claims the region crown and the top seed from the region in next week’s state playoffs.
Greenwood put itself in prime position to claim the district championship with a rain-soaked 28-0 win over Clarksdale last Friday. It was the 29th straight Region 3 victory.
It was the second shutout of the season for the Bulldogs.
“We obviously really like where this team is right now,” GHS coach Clinton Gatewood. “Our guys take a lot of pride in keeping this streak alive, but we have much bigger goals. But the first starts Friday with a Yazoo City team that is showing life late.
“I can tell you that we won’t overlook anybody. We’re just going to show up and play ball.”
William Stewart led the defense last week with 12 tackles, two sacks, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble. Quontavious Lymon finished with 10 tackles (three for loss), and Davin Anderson and Zavian Shelly had 11 stops each. Anderson also had four for loss, and Shelly had a sack, fumble recovery and forced a fumble.
Yazoo City, once considered dead in the water in the league race after an 0-7 start, has come on in the last two weeks, beating Gentry 32-16 two weeks ago and Rosa Fort 30-26 last week. The Indians have been outscored by a combined score of 371-164 this season.
GHS is 9-0 overall, 3-0 in league play. It blanked Yazoo City 32-0 last year en route to the program’s sixth straight Region 3-4A title.
The Dog defense is limiting opponents to just 14.36 points per contest, the third-fewest among the 45 teams across the state in 4A. That unit is led by Lymon, Travor Randle, Anderson and Shelly.
The Bulldogs come in averaging 31.29 points per game.
Offensively, Greenwood is led by sophomore quarterback DeAndre Smith, who has completed 80 of `35 passes for 1,717 yards, 17 touchdowns and four interceptions. Senior Kobe Chambers has a team-high 34 catches for 814 yards and nine touchdowns. He also has three kick/punt return scores this season,
Tailback Jamarion Addison leads the rushing attack with more than 900 yards on the ground.
Greenwood holds a 30-16-1 record all time against Yazoo City, which is winless on the road this season.
Win or lose Friday, the Bulldogs will be home next week in the first round of the playoffs.
