Two Bulldogs and one Tiger have been selected as the Commonwealth’s Players of the Week for their performances in games played last week.
Greenwood High cruised to a 41-7 win over Region 3-4A foe Rosa Fort Thursday in Tunica to improve to 8-0 overall and 2-0 in league.
Leading the way on the offensive side of the ball was sophomore signal caller DeAndre Smith. The 6-foot-2 quarterback completed 11 of 15 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 41 yards and a score on six carries.
Joining Smith as a player of the week is teammate William Stewart. The 6-foot-3 sophomore linebacker was credited with 10 tackles, which included three quarterback sacks. He also forced a fumble and had the recovery.
Greenwood has an open date this week and returns Oct. 25 at Clarksdale.
Sharing the Defensive Player of the Week honor with Stewart is Leflore County’s Masunte Haggie, who plays defensive tackle. The senior had 14 total tackles in the Tigers’ 26-24 win over Simmons High School last Thursday. Leflore, which is 4-3 overall and 4-1 in Region 3-1A, hosts Coffeeville Friday night.
Offensive honorable mentions go to Leflore County’s Maurice Edwards, Delta Streets’ Jalyn Lewis, Pillow Academy’s Jaden Simcox, J.Z. George’s Jordun Normal and D’Anthony McGlothan, and Carroll Academy’s Morgan Mims and Lofton Holly.
Defensive honorable mentions go to Leflore County’s Emanuel Stanley, Greenwood’s Jaylen Blake, Pillow’s Jacob Bush and Lawes McCool, and Carroll Academy’s Logan Taylor.
