DALY CITY, Calif. — Greenwood’s Kathleen Gallagher shot a 9-over-par 81 Tuesday during the second round of the stroke-play qualifying at the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship to finish tied for 28th in the 156-player field at Lake Merced Golf Club.
Gallagher, 15, who will be a sophomore at Pillow Academy this year, started Tuesday in third place overall after a first-round 1-over-par 71. She was hurt in the second round by three double bogeys.
The top 64 players after the first two days of stroke play will begin match play today. Gallagher, who helped lead Pillow to a AAA state golf championship this year, began her match against Megan Khang of Rockland, Mass., around noon today.
Khang finished tied for 34th in the stroke play with an 81 and 75.
Gallagher, the daughter of former PGA Tour player and current Champions Tour player Jim Gallagher Jr. and former LPGA Tour player Cissye Gallagher, is the third member of the family to qualify for a USGA championship.
Defending U.S. Girls’ Junior champion Ariya Jutanugarn took stroke-play medalist honors for the second consecutive year, carding a 36-hole total of 2-under.
The second and third rounds of match play will be played Thursday, and the quarterfinal and semifinal matches are on Friday. The 36-hole championship final will be played Saturday.
