Amanda Elzy teammates Dephabian Fant and La’Andre Pittman capped off the regular season for the Panthers with stellar performances in their 40-0 victory over Region 3-3A foe Humphreys County Friday night.
Fant, a 5-6 senior speedster, had 19 carries for 196 yards and scored three touchdowns and had one 2-point conversion run against the winless Cowboys.
Pittman, a two-way starter for Elzy, recorded 16 total tackles — nine solos and seven assists — and had two quarterback sacks to spark a fired-up Panther defense.
Fant and Pittman lead a quartet of players who have been chosen as the Commonwealth’s Players of the Week.
The Panthers, who finished league play with a 4-0 mark and are the Region 3 champs, are 7-3 overall. Elzy, winners of four straight, entertain Hatley High School Friday at 7 p.m. in the first round of the North 3A playoffs.
Joining Fant as an Offensive Player of the Week is Leflore County’s Emanuel Stanley. The 5-11, 230-pound senior, who played on the line last season and made the switch to running back in the spring, had three touchdown runs in the Tigers’ 52-0 win over Ethel High School in Region 3-1A play.
Stanley had 55 yards rushing on six carries, ran for one 2-point conversion, caught one pass for 20 yards and made eight tackles from his linebacker position on defense.
Leflore is 7-3 overall and ends region play with a 7-1 mark. Should Simmons beat West Bolivar Thursday night, the Tigers would win the district title. A West Bolivar win would make LC the second seed for the playoffs.
Greenwood High senior defensive tackle Quontavious Lymon is the fourth honoree. The 6-4, 285-pounder led the Bulldog defense with 10 tackles, five tackles for loss and three quarterback sacks in Greenwood’s 34-0 pasting of Yazoo City in their Region 3-4A finale.
Greenwood is 10-0 overall and went 4-0 in district play to claim its seventh straight region championship. The Bulldogs play host to Leake Central Friday at 7 p.m. in the first round of the North 4A playoffs.
Offensive honorable mentions go to Greenwood’s Jamarion Addison, Daylin Metcalf and Kobe Chambers, Elzy’s Howard Whitehead, Leflore County’s Dekari Johnson, and Carroll Academy’s Morgan Mims and Noah Beck.
Defensive honorable mentions go to Greenwood’s William Stewart and Davin Anderson, Elzy’s Tim Wilson and Smitdarius Wright, Leflore’s Maurice Edwards and Masunte Haggie, and Carroll’s Reese Fulton.
