Mississippi Valley State will be at home Saturday with a chance to do something it hasn’t done in many years.
With a victory Saturday in Itta Bena against Alabama State, the Delta Devils could register back-to-back wins since the end of the 2012 season, when they won three straight to close the year at 5-6.
Two straight wins against SWAC foes would give second-year head coach Vincent Dancy some much-needed momentum down the stretch that may carry over into the offseason.
“There is no doubt this is a big one, a chance to put a win streak together,” Dancy said.
Alabama State is coming off a tough 43-41 triple overtime loss to instate rival Alabama A&M.
Alabama State’s KHA’Darrius Davis was 12 of 31 passing for 236 yards and two touchdowns for the Bulldogs. But his failed two-point pass was the difference in the game.
He also ran for a score. Jordan Bentley ran for 197 yards and three touchdowns.
Davis had 202 yards and five touchdowns passing for the Hornets (3-4, 2-2).
The Bulldogs trailed Alabama State 21-7 at halftime but scored 14 unanswered points in the second half.
The Hornets’ two league losses have to come Alabama A&M and Alcorn State (35-7). MVSU also lost to Alcorn, 45-19. Both teams played Jackson State, with Valley losing 31-28 and the Hornets taking out the Tigers, 31-16.
Alabama State leads the all-time series with Mississippi Valley State 28-14-1, including winning the last nine times in the series.
The last time MVSU won in the series came in 2008 when they defeated the Hornets 10-3. Alabama St. has won 12 of the last 13 and 14 of the last 16.
