The Mississippi Valley State University Devilettes women’s softball team remained undefeated in conference action with a 7-2 win over the visiting Alabama State Lady Hornets Sunday afternoon.
The Devilettes swept the Lady Hornets during weekend action, winning 4-0 and 14-2 in a doubleheader Saturday.
On Sunday, Angelica Wade, Ashley Lawrence and Aysha Jackson each went 2-for-3 from the plate with Jackson driving in four runs. Lawrenve and Jackson each scored two runs in the game.
For Alabama State, Ayesha Famble and Quaniesha Limbrick each went 2-for-3 for Alabama State.
Both teams got on the board in the first inning. Alabama State got on the board when Aysha Famble scored on a Quaniesha Limbrick single.
MVSU would go ahead in the fourth inning when they pushed four runs across the plate. Jackson would cap the inning with a two-run single. MVSU added two runs in the fifth inning when Jackson would step to the plate with a runner on. She would take the pitch and drive it to right field for an inside-the-park home run scoring Ashley Lawrence and herself.
Brittany J. Franklin worked seven innings, allowing six hits and one earned run while striking out three.
The Devilettes will travel to Monroe, La., for a Tuesday afternoon contest with the University of Louisiana-Monroe. MVSU returns home for an April 3rd contest wiht Lindenwood University.
In a closely-competitive contest in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, the Devilettes scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as they downed the Lady Hornets 4-0. Ashley Hobbs and Ta’Niya Wallace each went 2-for-3 in the contest.
MVSU got on the board in the third inning when Lawrence, who reached on a fielding error, scored on an Angelica Wade ground out. In the fifth inning, Wallace nailed a triple to left field and scored one batter later.
The sixth inning saw Hobbs score on a Tiana Parks single before Courtney Davis would cross the plate on a Wallace single.
Lauren Derting would go seven innings scattering three hits and allowing one walk while striking out two.
In the second game of the doubleheader Saturday, a nine-run second inning and a four-run fourth inning keyed the Devilettes in the double-digit victory.
Lawrence went 3-for-3 scoring three times while Hobbs went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Tiana Parks finished going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three runs batted in.
Quaniesha Limbrick went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored for the Lady Hornets.
Alabama State jumped out early as they plated two in the first inning. MVSU would come back to cut the deficit in half as a Megan Hays single would score Rashundra Brass.
The second inning was the momentum changer as the Devilettes scored nine runs off seven hits and two errors. The inning was highlighted by a Hobbs RBI double that scored three and an Angelia Jones two-run blast over the right center field wall.
Mississippi Valley continued the scoring push in the fourth inning, sending four runners across the plate. The fourth inning was capped by Jackson. Jackson, who entered the game off the bench, sent the first pitch she saw over the right field wall for a three-run shot.
Lisa Jansen worked five innings allowing three hits, two runs and four walks while striking out four in the contest.
