Mississippi Valley State is licking its wounds this week.
Jacksonville State piled up 324 yards of offense in the first half, scoring touchdowns on five of its first seven possessions to breeze to a 71-0 victory over MVSU last Saturday.
The Delta Devils (0-2) managed just 65 yards of offense in the first half, including minus-26 yards rushing.
“We just didn’t play well and got dominated in all three phases of the game,” said first-year head coach Vincent Dancy. “And I take full responsibility for that. Losing like that is very disappointing, but our team is still upbeat because there is a lot of football left to be played this season.
“We just have to forget about it and go right back to work.”
Dancy’s team has an open date this week after opening the season with two tough road games, last week’s loss to the Gamecocks and a 35-7 loss to North Dakota. This gives the Delta Devils an extra week to prepare for their SWAC opener against defending SWAC Eastern Division champion Alcorn State in what will be the first home game of the Dancy era.
“It’s good to have extra time to prepare for a good opponent like Alcorn State,” the Valley coach said. “We have got a lot of things to fix before that game.”
