Greenwood may be about to catch midseason form in early September.
The Bulldogs followed up their opener, a relatively sloppy 48-12 win over an outmanned Leflore County squad, with an impressive 34-6 rout of visiting Holmes County Central before a packed house at Bulldog Stadium on Saturday. In doing so, they rolled up 478 total yards.
The offense was sparked by sophomore quarterback Deandre Smith, who was 16 of 22 for 335 yards and three touchdowns. He also threw for one 2-point conversion and ran for a 2-yard score. He finished with 34 yards rushing on five tries.
“It was good to see our young quarterback play well in a big game,” GHS coach Clinton Gatewood said. “Now, we have to build on that success and keep him progressing in the right direction.
“None of his success is possible without the help from a great group of receivers and the protection up front.”
Senior wideout Kobe Chambers had three grabs for 80 yards last week, while Daylin Metcalf finished with six receptions for 68 yards.
Greenwood (2-0) stays in the friendly confines of its stadium again as it entertains a winless Cleveland Central, which dropped a 7-6 decision to defending 6A State Champion Horn Lake last Friday. The Wolves lost 34-14 to Lafayette County in Week 1.
“It’s another tough team coming to our house. You know our guys will be ready,” Gatewood said.
Cleveland Central was formed in 2017 when Cleveland High School and East Side consolidated. It won the first meeting between the two schools that year, 24-14. GHS won 34-6 last season against the Wolves.
