Greenwood High School looks to extend its winning ways in Region 3-4A as the Bulldogs travel to Tunica to take on the Rosa Fort Lions Thursday.
After changing the game day from Thursday to Friday and now back to Thursday, kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
School officials said the last change came late Tuesday in an effort to miss possible incliment weather in the forecast for Friday evening.
Greenwood, 7-0 overall, is coming off a 41-0 pasting of Gentry in last week’s region opener. Rosa Fort knocked off Sheffield (TN) last week to improve to 6-1 overall.
“Tunica has a couple of really good athletes. When you look at the teams they have played, their schedule is not very competitive. I feel like we have the upperhand in that we have played some good teams so far this season,” said GHS head coach Clinton Gatewood. “Looking at them on film, they look to be very balanced on offense. No. 3 (Mondrel Boykins) is one we will have to watch
“Our defense is getting better each week. People forget we have four new starting linebackers and new linemen. We’re young in several areas, but they are working hard and listening to what the coaches tell them in practice.”
Senior running back Jamarion Addison led the way against Gentry on offense with 125 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries. He scored on runs of 7, 8 and 43 yards. Addison now has 707 yards and nine scores on 72 carries through seven games.
Sophomore quarterback DeAndre Smith only threw six passes, completing three for 73 yards and one touchdown. He is now 61 of 96 for 1,311 yards with 10 TDs and only two interceptions.
Senior wide receiver Kobe Chambers did not catch a pass last week but did have a 65-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. He had a kickoff return for a score two weeks ago against Noxubee County. On the season, he has 25 receptions for 638 yards and seven touchdowns.
The defense was led by the trio of Davin Anderson, William Stewart and Quontavious Lymon. Anderson, a sophomore linebacker, had 12 tackles against the Rams, while Stewart, also a sophomore linebacker, had nine tackles, which included a sack and four stops for loss. Lymon, a senior tackle, finished with eight tackles (two sacks and four for loss).
The Lions’ lone loss was a 50-12 setback to North Panola.
