Kobe Chambers was in the fifth grade the last time Greenwood lost a Region 3-4A game.
Chambers, a versatile senior offensive threat, played a key role in the Bulldogs’ 30th straight league victory Friday night as Greenwood rolled to a 34-0 shutout of Yazoo City — the Bulldogs’ third of the season. With the win comes the program’s seventh straight Region 3-4A championship.
“We ain’t coming off this mountain,” Greenwood coach Clinton Gatewood said about his team’s regional sumpremacy. “It’s nice and all, but it’s time to move on to what really matters — the playoffs.
“And I can tell you we will have to play better than we did tonight to go where we want to go.”
Chambers, a four-year starter, has been an integral part of the last four regional titles. He had 80 yards receiving on just three catches, with one going for a 23-yard touchdown and another going 31 yards to the house.
“Winning a seventh straight region title feels great. It lets people around Mississippi know that we are not just a mediocre team,” said Chambers. “And it feels even better to be able to contribute and give my all to this awesome program that I’m just happy to be a part of.”
Modest words from a young man who celebrated Senior Night in style. Chambers made a dynamic catch that set off a wild celebration on the GHS sideline in the first half.
On a slant route across the middle, the pass was well behind Chambers, who reached back across his body, hauled it in and raced untouched 23 yards for a touchdown. Gatewood said nothing Chambers does amazes him anymore.
“Man, it’s crazy to stop and think about what Kobe, and a lot of other seniors, have meant to this program. I look forward to more wins before they get out of here.”
The first chance for that will come next Friday, when the Bulldogs host Leake Central (4-7), the No. 4 seed from Region 4, in the opening round of the North 4A playoffs.
The Bulldogs (10-0) also capped their first perfect regular season since 1988. Carlos Bonner, a player on that ’88 team and a current assistant coach, likes what he sees as the Dogs enter the postseason.
“I really think we are the team to beat,” he said. “Our guys just have to keep working and stay hungry.”
Senior wideout Daylin Metcalf showed out as well in his final regular-season game at Bulldog Stadium, hauling in five catches for 131 yards, including a 63-yard TD.
Sophomore quarterback DeAndre Smith completed 9 of 15 passes for GHS for 217 yards, three touchdowns and an interception.
Senior Jamarion Addison continued to hold down the rushing attack, reeling off 130 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. He had his team’s only second-half score against Yazoo City (2-8). It came on a 10-yard scamper, and then Travor Randal closed out the scoring with the two-point run.
