Greenwood High School’s dominance in district play was rewarded with the announcement of the 2019 Region 3-4A team.
The Bulldogs swept all five of the top honors, which were selected by the league’s head coaches. GHS head coach Clinton Gatewood, who just completed his 10th season at the helm of the program, was tabbed as the region’s Coach of the Year.
Greenwood went 4-0 in district play and 13-1 overall as it lost 31-14 to Corinth in the North 4A Championship game. The Bulldogs won their first three games in the playoffs to reach the North State game for the fourth time in the last six years.
Senior wide receiver Kobe Chambers was named the region’s Player of the Year. Chambers, who also returned kicks and punts, finished with 51 receptions for 1,087 yards and 14 touchdowns. He had 1,613 all-purpose yards (1,087 receiving, 33 rushing, 162 in kick returns, 206 in punt returns, 60 on an interception return and 65 passing). He finished with 18 touchdowns and four 2-point conversions.
Greenwood sophomore DeAndre Smith was named the Offensive Player of the Year. Smith put together a solid season for the Bulldogs as he threw for 2,537 yards with 27 touchdowns and only five interceptions on 120 of 207 pass attempts (58 percent). He also ran for 690 yards and 15 scores on 102 carries.
William Stewart was tabbed as the Co-Defensive Player of the Year. The sophomore linebacker/defensive end proved to be a beast for the Bulldogs on the defensive side of the ball as he accumulated 26 quarterback sacks with 28 quarterback hurries. He finished with 80 solo stops and 39 assists for 119 total. He also deflected nine passes, recovered nine fumbles, caused eight fumbles and blocked three punts.
Junior Daylin Metcalf has been named the Special Teams Player of the Year. Metcalf, a starting wide receiver, had 32 receptions for 770 yards and six touchdowns. In limited playing time on defense, he had seven tackles and picked off two passes.
Named to the All-Region first-team offense from Greenwood are linemen Jaylen Smith, Marshakie Applewhite, Braidon Hodo, Malik Sanders and Edward Anderson, and running back Jamarion Addison. Wide receivers Zachary Westbrook and Warren Smith made the second team.
Chosen first-team defense are tackles Jaylen Blake and Quontavious Lymon, linebackers Altoryian Sandifer and Davin Anderson, cornerbacks Travor Randle and Jaterious Elam and free safety Omar Emmons.
Three players made the second team. They are linebacker Tyler Beckworth, strong safety Zavian Shelly and defensive end Wardell Hurt.
