Greenwood High’s boys basketball team kept things rolling as they picked up a narrow 43-38 Region 3-4A win over visiting Clarksdale High School Tuesday night.
The Bulldogs, winners of six in a row and seven of their last eight, held leads of 10-8 after one and 18-17 at the half. An 18-10 run in the third quarter gave the home team a 36-27 lead headed to the final eight minutes.
DeAndre Smith led GHS (18-9, 5-2) with nine points, four rebounds and three assists. Jaydon Nwachi, Omar Emmons, Auquez Chaney and Marshakie Applewhite had six points each. Applewhite grabbed seven rebounds, and Emmons had five assists and two boards.
The Lady Kittens rallied from a 46-33 deficit after the third period to slip past the Lady Bulldogs 60-59, dropping GHS to 9-18 overall and 2-5 in region play.
Greenwood led 18-7 after one and 34-25 at the half.
Greenwood returns Feb. 5 with its final regular season game at home against Gentry.
n Amanda Elzy: The Panthers placed four players in double figures en route to a 74-67 Region 3-3A win over Ruleville Tuesday night at Elzy.
Reggie Miller had 22, Devin Donley 21, William Stewart 13 and Charlie Ivory 10 for the Panthers, who move to 11-12 overall and 4-2 in league play.
Ruleville led 15-13 after one, but the Panthers took a 32-28 lead at the break. The Tigers pulled to within one at 46-45 by the end of the third frame.
In the girls game, Ruleville’s Jacorriah Bracey poured in 42 points to spark the Lady Tigers to a 70-60 victory over the Lady Panthers. Ruleville led 30-27 at the half and 49-43 after the third quarter.
Keyara McCline led Elzy (7-15, 2-4) with 16 points. Alexandria Martin tacked on 13, and Janay Williams had eight.
Elzy entertains Charleston Friday night.
n J.Z. George: The Lady Jaguars inched closer to snapping their losing skid as they lost a 44-42 decision to visiting Charleston Tuesday night in Region 3-3A action.
J.Z. George (2-21, 0-7) led 17-9 after the first and 23-21 at the half, but Charleston went in front 39-31 at the end of the third period.
Tashanda Fleming led the Lady Jags with 15 points. Tyeshia Grant tacked on seven points.
In the boys game, Charleston cruised to a 84-57 win over the Jaguars, who fall to 6-16 overall and 1-6 in league play. The Tigers led 19-11 after the first period, 40-25 at the half and 63-40 after the third frame.
Devontae Smith led J.Z. George with 17 points. Malik Branch tacked on 16, and Brandon Watt chipped in seven.
J.Z. George is at Humphreys County Friday.
n Carroll Academy: The Lady Rebels and Rebels concluded the regular season with a pair of wins on the road at Benton Academy Monday night.
The girls knocked off the Lady Raiders 35-28 as Sandy Rhea Tackett poured in a team-high 16 points. Gracie Turner had nine rebounds, and Mary Jordan Milton grabbed six boards.
A 12-4 run in the fourth for Carroll (16-11) erased a 24-23 deficit through three quarters.
In the boys game, three players scored in double figures as Carroll rallied for a 64-49 win to improve to 12-10. Benton led 21-7 after one and 34-29 at the half, but the Rebels held a 20-9 scoring advantage in the third for a 49-43 lead headed to the fourth period.
Reese Fulton led CA with 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Logan Taylor had 18 points. Morgan Mims chipped in 10 points, and Cooper Beck had six points and 15 rebounds.
Carroll plays in the District 1-AA Tournament next week at Marshall Academy.
n Delta Streets Academy: The Lions flexed their muscles as they picked up a 59-51 non-conference win over Greenville St. Joe Monday in Greenville.
Braxton Lewis led the Lions (11-8) with 20 points, and DJ Alston tallied 14. Qua Fuller tacked on 12, and Jaylen Jackson had 11.
The Lions will take on North Sunflower Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the District 2A Tournament at Delta.
DSA’s junior varsity team will play Thursday at 5:15 against the winner of the Humphreys-SIA contest at Deer Creek School in the District 2A JV Tournament.
