Greenwood High School claimed its seventh straight district championship with a rain-soaked 28-0 win over Clarksdale High School in Clarksdale Friday night.
The Bulldogs, who move to 9-0 overall and 3-0 in league play, close out the regular season next week with a home contest against Yazoo City. Clarksdale falls to 5-5 overall and finishes 2-2 in district. The Wildcats have an open date next week before the 4A playoffs start on Nov. 8.
Greenwood, which has won 29 straight games against Region 3 opponents, held an 8-0 lead after the first quarter. Sophomore quarterback DeAndre Smith scored from 32 yards out and tacked on the 2-point run. The first half ended at 8-0.
The Bulldogs steadily pulled away in the second half as they kept the ball on the ground. Smith got in from four yards away with 8:57 to go in the third to make it 14-0. At the 3:02 mark of the period, he raced into the end zone on a 21-yard run, and Travor Randle got the 2-pointer to give GHS a 22-0 lead headed to the fourth.
Sophomore Jarvis Clay concluded the scoring for the Bulldogs as he got in from three yards out at the 8:02 mark of the fourth.
Smith finished with 107 yards on 15 carries, and senior tailback Jamarion Addison had 101 yards on 19 tries. Clay had 30 yards on four carries.
William Stewart led the defense with 12 tackles, two sacks, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble. Quontavious Lymon finished with 10 tackles, and Davin Anderson and Zavian Shelly had 11 stops each. Anderson also had four for loss, and Shelly had a sack, fumble recovery and forced a fumble.
n Leflore County 32, Ray Brooks 0 — In a game that finished just before 8 p.m. with a running clock the entire second half, the Tigers won their sixth straight Region 3-1A contest Friday night in Benoit.
Leflore moves to 6-3 overall and 6-1 in district play with a home contest against Ethel High School next week. Brooks falls to 1-6 and 1-5 and goes to Shaw next week and hosts McAdams on Nov. 8 to close out the season.
Leflore, which has qualified for the state 1A playoffs, which start on Nov. 15, can finish no worse than second with a win next week. The Tigers can win the district title with a win over Ethel and a loss by West Bolivar to either West Tallahatchie, whom they played Friday, or to Simmons on Nov. 7.
Leflore did not attempt a pass in the game.
Kerrick Ross led the ground game with 110 yards on five carries, a touchdown and 2-point run. He scored on a 49-yard run in the second period. Senior Maurice Edwards scored from 45 yards out in the first and had 70 yards rushing on six tries. Senior Emanuel Stanley had a 15-yard TD run, and Ross had the 2-pointer in the first frame.
Stanley also scored from 22 yards out in the second quarter. He finished with 65 yards on five attempts.
Dekari Johnson ran in from 56 yards out in the third. He had 70 yards on five carries.
Edwards and Kwalique Swinney led the defense with six tackles each. Masunte Haggie had five stops, and Dezmond Ray had four stops and a pick.
