Pillow Academy pulled off a gutsy comeback in the second game of a doubleheader Thursday with Washington School to complete a three-game sweep.
The Mustangs trailed 7-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning but exploded for eight runs in the frame for a 9-7 comeback victory in the nightcap at PA's Utroska Field.
Pillow, which won the first 7-3, improves to 13-7 overall, 7-5 in the North AAA conference standings.
Between games, the Pillow baseball team made a special presentation in memory of Mitch Mitchell, a member of PA's 1979 state championship baseball team and loyal supporter who died in late January at the age of 47 after a courageous battle with Lou Gehrig's disease.
"It was really great to win all three against a good Washington team. I really like the way we are playing right now," said Mustang coach Bart Jenkins. "Our seniors dedicated this doubleheader to Mitch, and I know he's proud of the way they fought back. I know I am.
"Mitch coached these guys since they were old enough to walk until they got to me. It was just really special - something bigger than Pillow Academy baseball."
Freshman Adam Crick got the ball rolling for PA in the sixth with a leadoff single, followed by a double from sophomore catcher Luke Kimmel.
Freshman Landon Taylor had a two-run single, and senior first baseman Sam Rustom a two-run double in the big inning.
Rustom also had another double later in the sixth and finished with a team-high three hits.
In relief of Taylor, junior Bo Farmer (2-3) got the win on the mound. He gave up three runs in the top of the sixth but came back strong in the seventh to shut down the Generals.
After a leadoff walk to start the seventh, Farmer retired the next three batters to seal the win.
"We've changed up Bo's delivery, and it's been a work in progress," Jenkins said. "But he's much more comfortable with it, and we have a lot of confidence in him."
In the first game, Allen, a Meridian Community College signee, ran his record on the mound to 6-2 with a complete-game performance that saw him scatter six hits while striking out eight.
"Daniel probably didn't have his best stuff, but he pitched plenty well enough for us to win. That's a sign of a great pitcher," Jenkins said. "He pitched with a lot of guts."
Allen also had three hits, including a double, to lead the Mustangs at the plate.
Taylor, Gaston Lyon and James Davidson each had two hits.
