Success brings recognition and Greenwood High School’s deep run in the football playoffs has caught the attention of coaches in the 4A ranks.
Nine members of the 2019 team have been selected to the Mississippi Association of Coaches all-state teams, which were released Monday.
All-state teams were chosen in each classification. Amanda Elzy had two players make the Class 3A team, and J.Z. George had one player selected to the Class 2A team.
n Greenwood High: Of the nine players chosen from GHS, two made the first team and seven were tabbed as second-teamers.
Making the first-team offense for Greenwood are offensive linemen Malik Sanders (6-2, 270) and Jaylen Smith (6-1, 285). Sanders is a senior, and Smith is a sophomore.
Chosen to the second team, also on the offensive line, are senior Marshakie Applewhite (6-4, 300) and senior Edward Anderson (6-0, 220).
Joining those two on the second unit on offense are senior receiver Kobe Chambers (5-9, 180) and senior tight end Quaterius Silas (6-3, 240).
The defense has three second-team selections from Greenwood. They are senior lineman Quantavious Lymon (6-3, 285), sophomore linebacker Davin Anderson (6-3, 230) and senior cornerback Travor Randle (6-0, 195).
Corinth’s D.T. Sheffield and Carter Bonds were selected as the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year in 4A. Corinth won the state championship this past weekend as it beat Poplarville.
n Amanda Elzy: Making the first-team offense in 3A is senior running back Dephabian Fant.
Fant (5-6, 160) put together a superb final season at Elzy as he rushed for 2,368 yards and 27 touchdowns on 221 carries.
Joining Fant on the team is junior linebacker La’Andre Pittman (5-8, 190), who made the second-team defense as an inside linebacker. Pittman also played on the offensive line for the Panthers this past season.
Winona High School’s An’Darius Coffey was chosen as the Offensive Player of the Year, and Jefferson Davis County’s Marcus Middleton was selected as the Defensive Player of the Year in Class 3A. Jefferson Davis County won the state title over Noxubee County.
n J.Z. George: The one selection for the Jaguars was versatile sophomore D’Anthony McGlothan.
McGlothan (6-2, 160) made the team at safety on the second-team defense. He finished the season with 100 total tackles.
Taylorsville quarterback Ty Keyes was chosen as the Class 2A Offensive Player of the Year, while North Side linebacker Treshun Johnson was selected as the Defensive Player of the Year.
