Greenwood High School (1-1) got into the win column last Friday after beating Rosa Fort High School 28-6, and hit the road this week to take on Greenville Weston High School for their third game of the season.
“We’ve got our first win under our belt, we just take it week by week,” Greenwood head coach Clinton Gatewood said. “We’ve been preparing for the upcoming game at Greenville and we feel comfortable and confident we can go out and take care of our job.”
The Bulldogs are excited to play this weekend and look to take a shot at redemption after suffering a 26-16 loss at home last year to the Hornets.
“Anytime you hear football and you smell the grass being cut, you get excited,” Gatewood said. “We’re glad to have this opportunity to go back and redeem ourselves from last year.”
Greenwood’s win last Friday came from solid play on both sides of the ball. Freshman Jawuan Gideon scored two rushing touchdowns, junior Fredric Ford recovered a fumble and took it for a 27-yard touchdown, and the duo of Gideon and senior Alex Larry led the defense with six tackles each.
GHS may have won, but Gatewood wasn’t thoroughly pleased with everything his team did.
“We were glad with the win,” Gatewood said, “but we didn’t meet all of my expectations. There were still a lot of unnecessary penalties, and kids who didn’t know their position or what teams they are on. There are still some areas we have to continue to grow in.”
Greenville boasts an overall record of 0-2, but Gatewood isn’t going to let that record fool him. Gatewood said Greenville will be a difficult team to face, and he’s got to make sure his team will be ready.
“Greenville is a very balanced team, a very talented team. They are 0-2 but the record don’t speak for what their talent holds,” Gatewood said. “They’ll be ready to roll and we’ve got to be up for the challenge.”
Kickoff is at 7 p.m. on Friday.
