The Pillow Academy tennis program is sending its top girls singles players to next Thursday’s MAIS 5A State championships in Ridgeland.
Seniors Dia Chawla and Avery McDaniel each qualified for next week’s tournament with wins in the North State semifinals on Tuesday in Starkville. Chawla beat Lamar School’s top player, 6-1, 7-5, while McDaniel cruised past Lamar School’s No. 2, 6-1, 6-2. Chawla and McDaniel each suffered straight-set losses in their finals matchups against Park Place and Bayou, respectively. They’ll look to claim the 5A crown again next week after both taking home state titles in 2019.
In doubles action, the young duo of Madeline Carroll and Izzy Hodges lost to Leake Academy in the semifinals, 6-1, 2-6, 4-6.
The pair has plenty of time to develop and avenge the North State defeat, though, as Carroll is a seventh grader and Hodges is an eighth grader.
- Golf: Bradley Lovelady overcame muddy conditions on Tuesday at the Greenwood Country Club, shooting a season-low 79 at the North 5A tournament to qualify for next week’s 5A State championships in Cleveland.
Lovelady’s 79 tied for seventh place among dozens of golfers from Bayou, Washington, Lamar School, Starkville and Magnolia Heights.
Andrew Brock also shot a 96 for Pillow, missing the cut for next week’s tournament.
