The Greenwood High tennis team got one last boost before Friday’s district tournament at Clarksdale, taking down Gentry 5-2 on Thursday at Mississippi Valley State.
Luisha Stanley earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the top boys singles matchup while Arlonda Henderson cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win in the top girls singles matchup.
In doubles action, the Bulldogs managed a 6-2, 6-3 victory in the top boys matchup. Kendall Smith and Janiya Henderson didn’t drop a set in their 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 1 girls doubles matchup. In mixed doubles play, David Kelly and Davianna Brent pulled out a 6-0, 6-1 win.
- Pillow Academy 5, Starkville 4: The Mustangs picked up some momentum Thursday with a 5-4 win at Starkville Academy, their second victory in the past three days.
Pillow (3-2) only triumphed once in doubles action, but the squad’s singles players went undefeated to secure the win.
Top girls singles player Dia Chawla didn’t drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win. No. 1 boys singles Noah Lary cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory. No. 2 girls singles Avery McDaniel only dropped one game in a 6-0, 6-1 result while No. 2 boys singles Druvh Patel had little trouble in a 6-0, 6-2 triumph.
The top boys doubles duo of Sumner Tackett and William Brown earned the lone doubles victory of the day for the Mustangs, 6-1, 6-2.
