The Pillow Academy offense erupted for 16 hits in an 18-5 District 1-5A victory over Washington School Tuesday in Greenville.
The Mustangs, who improve to 8-16 overall and 2-8 in conference, tallied five runs in the first inning, 10 in the second and three in the fourth. Washington scored one run each in the first, second and fourth innings, and two in the third.
Brock Makamson (3-2) got the win on the mound. He went all four innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits, walking three and striking out four.
Dayne Sanford belted his seventh home run of the season, a three-run shot in the second inning. He finished with four RBIs, a single and scored three runs.
Chamberlain McCain also showed out at the plate with a four-RBI day. He had a single, two doubles and scored a pair of runs. Makamson drove in two runs with two singles and scored a run, and Drew Lamb had a single, double and scored three times. Nelson Hodges had two singles, scored runs and stole two bases.
Perry Smith and Elliott Flowers both had a single, scored a run and drove in two runs each. Trace Schmitz had two singles and scored once, and JC Garrard had a single, RBI and scored three times.
Pillow and Washington will play a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. Thursday at Coleman Field in Utroska Park.
- Greenwood High: The Bulldogs closed out their 2022 campaign with a 16-6 loss to Region 3-4A foe Gentry High School Tuesday in Indianola.
Greenwood, which finishes at 1-8 overall and 0-8 in region play, gave up one run in the first, four in the second, six in the third and five in the fourth. The Bulldogs plated two in the second and four in the third.
Tennill Cannon went all four innings for GHS. Kaleb Cotton and Bradley O’Bryant had a double and scored a run each, and Jordan McAtee and Kavion Young had a single and scored two runs apiece. Dillon Fry had a single.
- J.Z. George: The Jaguars (7-9 overall, 4-6 in Region 2-2A) are the fourth seed from their region and will take on Region 1 top-seed East Union in the first round of the playoffs.
The two teams will play a doubleheader at East Union Friday starting at 5 p.m. If there is a split in the first two games, a third game will be played Saturday in North Carrollton at 2 p.m.
The winner of the series moves on to face the winner of the series between Strayhorn and Nanih Waiya next week in the second round.
- Amanda Elzy: The Panthers will take on Nettleton High in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs Friday.
The Panthers (3-8 overall, 2-6 in Region 3-3A), the fourth seed from the district, will take on the Tigers in a doubleheader in the best-of-three series starting at 4 p.m. Nettleton is the top seed from Region 4. A third game, if necessary, will be played Saturday at Elzy’s field.
The winner of the series will play the North Panola-Booneville winner next week in the second round.
