Pillow Academy put up a valiant effort in Game 2 of their doubleheader Thursday night against conference foe Bayou Academy, dropping a hard-fought 17-15 decision to the Colts at Coleman Field in Utroska Park.
Bayou led 2-0 after one, 6-2 after three and 10-3 after four. Pillow’s bats came alive in the fourth frame with eight runs, which gave the Mustangs an 11-10 lead. The Colts scored one run in the top of the sixth, but Pillow responded with four runs in the home half of the inning for a 15-11 lead headed to the seventh.
Bayou took advantage of some untimely walks and five base hits as the Colts scored six runs to take a 17-15 advantage. Pillow went three up, three down to end the game.
Pillow was outhit 16-15 and made seven errors in the field. Four pitchers combined to walk seven batters and three batters were hit by pitches.
Dayne Sanford (1-4) took the loss. He went 31/3 innings, recording just one out in the seventh. He allowed eight runs (five earned) on five hits, walking three and striking out four.
Elliott Flowers relieved Sanford and got the final two outs. He yielded one hit. Brock Makamson started the game, going 21/3 innings, yielding six runs (three earned) on eight hits, walking three and striking out two. Trace Schmitz got two outs in the third but gave up three runs on two hits, walking one.
Schmitz had two singles and a double, drove in three runs and scored three times. JC Garrard had three singles, scored three runs and drove in one run. Sanford had two singles and three RBIs.
Nelson Hodges had a pair of singles and scored three times, and Makamson had two singles, drove in three runs and scored a run. Drew Lamb had an RBI double, and Chamberlain McClain had two singles, scored two runs and drove in one run. John Heston Powers had a single, RBI and scored two times.
Pillow (7-15 overall, 1-8 in District 1-5A) plays host to Magnolia Heights School Tuesday at 6 p.m.
- Amanda Elzy: The Panthers fell into an early hole Friday that they couldn’t climb out of, falling to visiting Yazoo City, 19-6, in their final home game.
Kyheim Outlaw took the loss on the mound, giving up 11 runs on 13 hits while striking out one and walking none in four innings of work. Andrew Moore finished the game for Elzy (2-7, 1-5 Region 3-3A), yielding seven runs on six hits along with a strikeout in one inning.
The Panthers’ lone senior, Terry Randle Jr., celebrated his final home game with a single and a run scored. Martize Lot tallied an RBI single and a run scored while Jaquavius Hayes reached base twice on hit by pitches and scored once. Detrick Mumford had a single and Cody Randle drove in a run with a fielder’s choice. Outlaw recorded a single and a run scored, and Jordan Smith walked and scored.
Elzy visits Winona on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
- J.Z. George: The Jaguars dropped to 4-9 overall with a 12-2 setback at Central Holmes Christian School Thursday in Lexington.
Central Holmes plated three runs in the second frame, four in the fourth and five in the fifth. J.Z. George scored a run each in the fourth and fifth innings.
Keiyhaun Wilks (0-5) took the loss on the mound. He had a single at the plate and scored one run.
Alan Busby had a double and scored a run, and Alex Criss and Laike Shute had a single apiece.
J.Z. George hosts Leflore Monday at 4 p.m. in North Carrollton.
