The Greenwood High tennis team is sending five players to the state tournament on April 26 in Oxford.
Arlonda Henderson won first place at Friday’s district tournament at Clarksdale to qualify for state in the girls singles bracket. The sophomore has only lost one match this season.
Arlonda’s sister, Janiya, also qualified for the state tournament along with her partner, Kendall Smith, with a first-place finish in girls doubles action. The pair has lost just two matches all season long.
The mixed doubles team of David Kelly and Davianna Brent qualified for the second year in a row.
They lost in the first round last year, but they believe the past year of practice will make a difference this postseason.
“We didn’t start as soon as we thought because of COVID, so practice was a little off,” Brent said. “This year, it’s better. Our coach has had us work a lot harder than last year and we’ve played a lot better than last year.”
As a team, the Bulldogs came close to claiming the district crown on Friday, but they placed second behind Senatobia by a single match.
They’ll visit New Albany on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in the first round of the playoffs.
