The Greenwood Salvation Army and Walmart will join forces Friday through Sunday to sponsor the annual “Stuff the Bus” back-to-school event.
The public is invited to drop off school supplies at The Salvation Army, contactless collection bins at the Greenwood Walmart, located on U.S. 82 West.
In a normal year, a school bus would be at Walmart with two bins, and Salvation Army volunteers would be at each entrance of the store to collect any school supplies that customers drop off, said Capt. Keisha McMullin, commanding officer of the Greenwood Salvation Army. However, due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will just be two contactless bins — made to look like school buses — at each Walmart entrance for people to leave the school supplies.
McMullin said the most needed items include flash cards, pocket folders, three-ring binders, rulers, pencils and notebooks.
On Tuesday, the donated items will be made available to the public from 10 a.m. to noon at The Salvation Army, located on 214 Mississippi 7.
“Stuff the Bus” usually is a one-day event, but “this year, because no one is able to stand outside beside the bins, we’re doing all three days,” McMullin said. Parents will need to bring identification when picking up supplies.
