Leflore Legacy Academy students will showcase their talents in the inaugural Literacy and Me event on July 13.
The students will put on various performances and participate in other activities at the gathering, which will be held at the Greenwood Community Center at 709 Ave. I from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
The students have been taking part in a summer literacy program at the charter school, which is housed in a classroom building leased from First Baptist Church on West Washington Street.
The program is funded through a 21st Century Learning Centers grant.
Display tables showcasing some of the art the students have produced will be set up at the Community Center. There will also be live events, such as a choral performance and theater skits.
The literacy program’s site coordinator, Whitney Christenson, said the name “Literacy and Me” is rooted in the school’s focus, which is putting the spotlight on its students and providing literacy in all types of areas.
“Giving the students an opportunity to show what they know — it’s really exciting,” Christenson said. “We’re here to help them, but this is work that they’re doing.”
The gathering will kick off with an assortment of songs performed by the Legacy choir.
This summer, Legacy students have been taking classes involving college literacy, financial literacy and also the history of music. The July 13 event will highlight what they have been learning.
Christenson said many of the events will be fast-paced and mostly student-coordinated.
Also, some of the quickest keyboard typists, both parents and students, will be dueling to find out who is the ultimate king of the keyboard.
Each person will receive a pre-made snack bag upon entering. Tickets are free to everyone, although they must be reserved, as the Community Center’s capacity is 200 seats. About 130 already have been reserved.
“Any parents of incoming sixth graders who would like to get a taste of what Leflore Legacy Academy is like should come to this event.” Christenson said.
Christenson also mentioned that many of the parents of students haven’t seen each other in person since the start of the pandemic, and this is the first in-person event that Leflore Legacy is hosting.
