Greenwood Leflore Hospital has entered into an exclusive partnership with a Jackson radiology firm that will enhance the speed and expertise with which mammograms, CT scans and other X-rays are read, say hospital officials.
“The turnaround time will decrease significantly, and it’s being read by a subspecialist so it will actually improve the quality of reporting that we’re able to give to our patients as well,” said Jason Studley, the Greenwood hospital’s CEO.
Under the agreement, Lakeland Radiologists will provide round-the-clock coverage to remotely interpret the X-rays. The Greenwood hospital’s radiology technicians will perform the X-rays, and there will still be a full-time interventional radiologist on staff during normal business hours. But Lakeland, said Studley, will be there to take over on nights and weekends, or when the staff radiologist is tied up performing a minimally invasive procedure, or when the patient’s case requires specific expertise.
“If a patient comes in for a mammogram,” Studley explained, “they actually are having a specialist in mammography being able to read the interpretation of those results more so than a general radiologist having to jump from one modality to another.”
Lakeland Radiologists has provided radiology and imaging services in Mississippi for nearly 60 years, according to its website. It includes more than 25 radiologists. X-rays sent to Lakeland will be read by subspecialists with expertise in areas such as mammography, cardiac imaging and musculoskeletal areas.
“We actually will be the first hospital in the Delta to be able offer all of this wide range of subspecialists in radiology,” Studley said.
