The Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District has taken action to address the stray animals around and underneath Leflore County High School as well as the bats in the auditorium of Davis Elementary.
Dr. Mary Brown, the superintendent, said during Tuesday’s special called school board meeting that Leflore County High and Leflore County Elementary schools were closed from Monday through Wednesday of this week to allow exterminators to spray both campuses for fleas and other pests.
According to Brown, stray cats and dogs have been found around Leflore County High, and exterminators have been working to remove them and spray for pests. Leflore County Elementary, which is next to the high school, also has been closed so it can be sprayed, Brown said.
Exterminators will spray again next week and the week after that, but this will be done on the weekends or after school so students are not around, Brown said.
Once all the stray animals have been removed, any openings to the buildings will be sealed off to prevent further infestation.
During the weekend of Sept. 4-5, exterminators were sent to the auditorium of Davis Elementary to place traps and poison to remove the bats, Brown said.
About 30 were removed, and the exterminators will continue to monitor the situation.
