Delta Streets Academy will hold commencement ceremonies for its Class of 2021 beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday at Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Twelve seniors are set to graduate from the all-male private school, said T. Mac Howard, its founder and executive director.
This year’s valedictorian is JaMarkus McChristion with a 3.89 GPA.
McChristion, 18, said he intends to enroll in a community college in Mississippi but is presently undecided on which one.
Following his graduation from community college, he said he’d like to transfer to a four-year university: perhaps Mississippi State University or one of two historically black universities, Alcorn State in Mississippi or Morgan State in Baltimore, Maryland.
McChristion said he’d either like to study computer science or software engineering. If he gets his degree in software engineering, then he’d get a minor in computer science, he said.
McChristion played sports throughout high school — soccer during his sophomore and junior years and football during his senior year.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, students at Delta Streets were given the option to take classes virtually or in person. McChristion said he decided to take classes in person.
The best part of his high school career, he said, was the interactions he had with his teachers.
“Since it was a small school, the teachers and students had a close connection,” he said.
McChristion said he’s not nervous at all about high school graduation but will miss his classmates and teachers.
“I’m just ready for the next step,” he said.
