The Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School Board is working on a policy to protect whistleblowers.
During a special called meeting Thursday, Kelvin Pulley, the board’s attorney, passed out a sample whistleblower policy from another district for board members to read through.
The policy “would protect employees from … any sort of retaliation or threat of retaliation if that employee had some information regarding improper action by district personnel or improper action by consultants or anyone in the school district,” Pulley said.
Samantha Milton, president of the board, said that the sample policy the board members received is just for them to peruse and that if they have any questions they can get back with her or the attorney.
In other business, Pulley told the board that he has reached out to one of the donors who had given money to the district’s scholarship funds account, who told Pulley that those donated funds can be donated to a nonprofit organization.
Last week Pulley informed the board that, according to the Office of the State Auditor, school districts are no longer allowed to administer scholarship funds accounts. The district had been using that account to disburse money to students for graduation purposes.
The account was funded by donations, often in the form of scholarships made in remembrance of loved ones.
The attorney said that others who have donated money to the account still need to be reached.
