Pillow Academy senior Michael Jefcoat threw a no-hitter to put the exclamation mark on Senior Night as the Mustangs completed a series sweep of rival Washington School with a pair of dominant shutout wins on Thursday.
It was the first sweep of a conference opponent in head coach Jud Thigpen’s seven-year tenure, clinching the No. 2 seed for the playoffs.
Jefcoat was a walk away from a perfect game in the second half of the doubleheader, a 12-0 rout, striking out one over five shutout innings.
Eli Simmons and Nelson Hodges paced Pillow at the plate. Simmons went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs while Hodges went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
In the first game, Lawes McCool tossed a three-hit shutout to lead the Mustangs to a 10-0 win. The senior also struck out seven while walking four.
At the plate, Nolan Marshall led the way with two hits, two runs and three RBIs. Dayne Sanford and Brock Makamson each drove in two runs. Matthew Jefcoat finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored, an RBI and a walk. JC Garrard had two runs scored and a walk while McCool went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
- Carroll Academy: Senior Braxton York delivered a walk-off single on a 3-1 count in the bottom of the seventh inning to plate Hunter Grantham as the Rebels edged visiting Tri-County Academy 2-1 Thursday.
York (5-1) also got the win on the mound in relief of Drew Thomas. York went the last three innings, walking just one and fanning two. Thomas worked the first four innings, allowing one run on three hits, walking one.
Carroll scored its first run in the bottom of the second inning when William Panni scored on a ground out. Tri-County scored its lone run in the top of the fifth frame.
Grantham had a double, and Panni, Brennan Blaylock and Reid Blaylock had a single each. Grantham also stole two bases.
Carroll, 19-4 overall, visits North Delta School Friday at 6 p.m.
