When DaDa Lewis was diagnosed with cancer four months ago, his friends decided they wanted to hold a benefit event involving his favorite hobby: sporting clay.
But Lewis, a 63-year-old ag pilot based out of Indianola, had an even better idea.
“The first words out of his mouth were, ‘I don’t want a penny,’” recalled his friend, Kitt Bryant. “‘He said, ‘I want to do something for the children.’”
So after traveling to sporting clay events across the country together, Lewis and his friends set out on a new mission organizing a fundraiser for the University Medical Center Candlelighters, a non-profit based in Jackson that offers support for children and families from the time they get a cancer diagnosis.
“It’s a wonderful organization,” Bryant said. “It’s something we’re proud to do. We’re going to probably do it every year because I can’t think of anything better than helping children out in a situation like this.”
The sporting clay fundraiser will take place June 12 at Belulah Land Sporting, which is welcoming participants to its McCarley property for the day.
“I’ve shot all over the country at different sporting clay events, and that’s one of the nicest places that you’d ever want to shoot,” Bryant said.
There will be prizes given away and a barbecue lunch served, as well. Individual entry costs $150 and team entry is priced at $600.
