Leflore County’s district title hunt is on hold this week with non-conference foe Humphreys County coming to Itta Bena on Friday, but fifth-year head coach Eric House isn’t worried about his red-hot Tigers losing focus.
“Well, I can say one word: homecoming,” House said of his team’s motivation this week. “That speaks for itself. We know that it’s going to be an impact crowd with a lot of alumni coming back who are looking for us to put on a good show. We want to win out. We got on a little hot streak, so it’s important to finish strong.”
Leflore is currently riding a three-game winning streak during which the offense has averaged more than 50 points per game. The Tigers are hitting their stride at the right time with their last two regular season games at their favorite home location. Leflore hasn’t lost at Marcellus Singleton Stadium since October of 2018.
Humphreys County (3-5) is led by former Leflore defensive coordinator Timothy Johnson. They last faced off in 2018, when the Tigers handed the Cowboys a 50-0 defeat.
“We know that they’re going to try to push us, pound us down the field,” House said. “So we have to be up for the challenge.”
- Amanda Elzy hosts Winona — It might seem unlikely, but there’s still a potential path for the Panthers (2-6) to defend their Region 3-3A title if they win their last two matchups against Winona and Humphreys County.
Elzy first has to shake off a tough 32-28 loss to Yazoo County that slipped away in the final minutes. Meanwhile, Winona (7-1) enters Friday’s road game with momentum after beating Humphreys County to take an upper hand in the division race.
“I think this week is going to be a good one,” first-year head coach Morris Bush said. “A lot of people are counting us out already. It was the same way in 2019, going to Winona for the district championship and we ruined their plans. So hopefully we’ll go out this week and do the same thing.”
The Panthers held onto a late 28-26 lead last week before Yazoo County scored a go-ahead touchdown as rain and windy conditions struck in the fourth quarter.
“We played a great second half,” Bush said. “If we came out of the gates playing like that, it probably wouldn’t have been a close ball game.”
