The Pillow Academy football team heads to Flowood on Friday for its toughest test so far this season against Class 6A foe Hartfield Academy.
The Hawks (2-0) have outscored their first two opponents, Clinton Christian and Magnolia Heights, by a combined 84-14.
“It’ll be the best team we’ve played yet,” first-year Pillow head coach Jim Crowder said. “They’re all the things you think of when you think of a good team: well-coached, big, physical, fast. They’ll compete in 6A for the state championship.”
In last week’s 37-8 victory over North Delta School, junior running back Dayne Sanford surpassed the 100-yard rushing mark for the second week in a row. The Mustangs’ rushing attack was supplemented by a passing game that produced 123 yards and a touchdown through the air courtesy of quarterback Drew Lamb.
Junior Brock Makamson had another big game on both sides of the ball, hauling in a 75-yard touchdown pass and totaling five tackles. Senior defensive end Britt Reichle led the defense for the second straight week with 12 tackles, including two for a loss.
It’ll take a team effort for Pillow (2-0) to pull off an upset in its road opener.
“It’ll be our toughest test,” Crowder said. “We got to go in and approach it play by play. Just give it our best, keep fighting and hopefully come out with a hard-fought win.”
