Booker T. Chambers is reuniting with a former Southwestern Athletic Conference recruiter-turned-rival on the coaching staff at Mississippi Delta Community College this fall.
Chambers, a Greenwood High standout who went on to have an illustrious career at Missisippi Valley State University, will serve as wide receivers coach next season under new MDCC head coach Cedric Thomas.
“Coach Thomas recruited me in high school and we played against each other in the SWAC,” Chambers said. “I’m familiar with Coach Thomas — he’s a great coach and a great leader. I just feel like with the type of person he is, it’s a good opportunity for me.”
Thomas, who recruited Chambers while he served as defensive coordinator at Alcorn State, took over the Trojans’ program in late December after a winless 2020 campaign. Thomas most recently served as the defensive backs coach at Southern Mississippi.
“I know the struggles that program has had over the years,” Chambers said. “Having a new staff, we’re just trying to bring a new energy there.”
Chambers certianly knew how to bring energy during his playing days. As a 5-foot-7, 150-pound high school senior, he led GHS to an 11-3 record and a spot in the North 4A title game. The quarterback and kick return specialist tossed for 2,549 yards and 28 touchdowns while also rushing for 712 yards and nine TDs en route to being named the Commonwealth’s 2014 Player of the Year.
Those eye-popping numbers attracted the attention of Thomas, but Chambers ultimately chose to attend nearby MVSU over Alcorn State. In his first year in Itta Bena, he won the SWAC’s Freshman of the Year award. Then Chambers went on to join Jerry Rice as the only non-quarterbacks in school history to amass three straight seasons of 1,000-plus all-purpose yards.
Chambers most recently coached wide receivers at GHS under head coach Clinton Gatewood. He also started a youth football team this summer.
