Derrick Simpson, manager of Greenwood Market Place, is recognized for his contributions not just in Greenwood but throughout the Delta.
The Sunflower County Board of Supervisors recognized Simpson Monday with a resolution for his service to the underserved and to cancer patients.
Simpson, who has managed Market Place for 27 years, previously worked at a Piggly Wiggly location in Indianola.
Freddie White-Johnson, the founder and president of the Fannie Lou Hamer Cancer Foundation, said it is rare to find someone like Simpson “who goes above and beyond to be a blessing for all mankind.”
Derrick does a lot for the community,” she said. “He gives out turkeys and hams and food boxes throughout the Mississippi Delta. Even though he’s in business in Greenwood, he provides assistance throughout the Mississippi Delta.
“He’s an unsung hero that needs to be recognized for his contribution to mankind.”
A ceremony at Market Place is scheduled for 2 p.m. to recognize Simpson and award him a key to the city of Greenwood. A parade will follow at 3 p.m.
