The Salvation Army of Greenwood is accepting school uniform donations to assist students in Leflore County.
Led by Sgt. Shyan Hicks, workers and volunteers with The Salvation Army set up tents in front of Greenwood Market Place on Thursday to accept uniforms as well as monetary donations.
Hicks said the event was a part of Ambassador for Good Day, which educates and engages the public on the work The Salvation Army does.
An ambassador is also chosen as the representative of good work in the community, Hicks said
Dr. Jerryl Briggs, president of Mississippi Valley State University, was chosen for his “passion for school, community and the students he serves.”
Briggs is also a member of The Salvation Army’s advisory board.
“What we are doing at The Salvation Army is celebrating him, but we’re also collecting donations for kids who can’t afford uniforms,” said Hicks. “After we collect everything, we’re going to reach out to the schools to see who is in need of uniforms.”
She said that they had also received plenty of financial donations in their kettles.
For those who were unable to attend the event at Market Place, donations may also be made at The Salvation Army location at 212 Mississippi 7.
“If they do donate to the store, we ask that they bring it in so that it doesn’t get mixed in with the rest of our donations,” she said. “If it’s brought in and placed somewhere separate, we can make sure it can go towards those who need it.”
Derrick Simpson, manager of Greenwood Market Place, said he is always happy to welcome The Salvation Army to the store for anything the organization needs.
“I couldn’t find a better group of people to work with if I walked around the whole Earth,” he said.
Hicks, who took over managing the Greenwood chapter following the departure of Jason and Keisha McMullin to Laurel, said she has great partners to work with.
She said the next big event the organization is preparing for is the Christmas donation season. Sign-ups for volunteer bell ringers will begin in October.
