One Greenwood resident is ready to push for different traffic signals at the corner of U.S. 82 and Garrard Avenue.
Anglean Wardell, who works at the Leflore County Courthouse, said she was almost T-boned on her way to work by an 18-wheeler that ran the light at the intersection Monday. “There have always been accidents there,” Wardell said.
She suggested that, in place of the traffic lights that currently govern the intersection, stop signs be installed.
“With four-way stops, people have to be aware of what’s around them. Everybody would be more responsible,” she said.
She spoke with Ward 3 Greenwood City Councilman Ronnie Stevenson on Tuesday and claimed that he agreed with her but that the intersection is out of the city’s jurisdiction because it intersects with the highway.
Stevenson said Wednesday that Wardell would have to contact the Mississippi Department of Transportation, since she is the only citizen who has spoken to him about this issue.
“If there was a larger amount of citizens, then yes,” the council would take steps to contact MDOT, Stevenson said.
He said it is up to MDOT’s engineers to determine whether the area needs to be studied and whether a four-way stop directed by stop signs would be safer.
Wardell said she was willing to take whatever steps are necessary to address what she calls a “big deal.”
“I can’t sit by and say nothing,” she said.
She said she has spoken with other community members who agree that the intersection is a problem area. “Everybody I mentioned this to agreed it would be a good place to have a four-way stop,” she added.
