Students at Leflore County High School will be studying virtually through Wednesday, the last day of the school year, because of a water main break in their building Monday.
The Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District’s board approved the plan Monday morning during a special called meeting. Dr. Mary Brown, superintendent, described the situation. She also recommended closing the high school building “out of an abundance of caution” and opting for virtual instruction online.
She said the water main break did not affect Leflore Elementary’s building, so classes are continuing there.
At Leflore High, students had drinking water and what Brown described as a small number of students were being housed in the gymnasium prior to obtaining permission to close the high school building. Upchurch Plumbing was on hand in response to the break.
After the meeting, she was asked about a cause for the break and replied that the pipes there are old. She also was asked about whether the break reflects the need for a long-term solution. “We have always indicated the need for new schools,” Brown said.
