A GoFundMe campaign has been set up for a former Greenwood police chief who is suffering from cancer.
Ray Moore, 65, who worked for the Greenwood Police Department for 33 years, including six as chief, was recently admitted to hospice care due to cancer that has spread in his body.
The fundraiser was set up by Dudley Pleasants, a reserve deputy with the Leflore County Sheriff’s Department and a longtime friend of Moore’s.
Pleasants said the fundraiser is intended to help Moore’s wife, Jackie, with expenses. Ray and Jackie have been married for 33 years.
Pleasants said he met Moore when the two were third graders at the former Sunnyside Elementary School in Minter City. Years later, Pleasants would ask his friend for some career advice.
“I had the desire to get into law enforcement and talked to Ray about it a good bit, and he begged me not to,” said Pleasants, a farmer by trade. “I remember him telling me, ‘Dudley, you have such a good disposition. This is going to ruin it.’”
He said Moore has been a dependable, trustworthy friend.
“We fought like cats and dogs from time to time and had differences of opinion, and Ray would send me home, and we laugh about that now,” Pleasants said. “We’ve always known we can count on each other.”
Moore started working for the Greenwood Police Department in 1996. He suffered a stroke in 2018 while serving as chief and retired at the start of 2020. Later that year, he was diagnosed with liver cancer, which was originally treated but came back as small cell carcinoma.
The cancer has spread to his bones and brain, according to his wife.
“He’s sleeping a lot now,” said Pleasants. “They’ve changed him from a pill morphine to a liquid morphine. Just trying to keep him as comfortable as possible.”
