The Greenwood City Council gave its approval Tuesday to contribute more than $7,000 to help upgrade a gas line for a new business.
Angela Curry, executive director of the Greenwood-Leflore-Carroll Economic Development Foundation, told the council Tuesday that Grande Delta Corp., a small food-processing company, soon will open a new location at 2900 Baldwin Road.
The start-up company will bring about 20 new jobs to Greenwood.
“We need some help on this project,” said Curry, who described the existing infrastructure as “not quite adequate” for the company to operate.
“We always welcome potential employers in our city, and I think that $7,000 invested in that company will be a very small amount,” said Ward 7’s Carl Palmer.
The council approved the resolution 4-0.
Mayor Carolyn McAdams, Ward 1’s Johnny Jennings, Ward 4’s Charles McCoy and Council President Ronnie Stevenson were absent, attending the National League of Cities Congressional City Conference in Washington. The group was scheduled to return to Greenwood on Wednesday.
In Stevenson’s absence, Palmer presided over the meeting.
Also, the council:
- Approved the lowest and best bid of more than $432,000 for Suncoast Infrastructure Inc. for a Claiborne Avenue sewer improvement project.
- Approved a resolution directing Willis Engineering to design a new parking lot for city employees on a plot of land at 215 Carrollton Ave. The area is the former location of Perry’s Pawn Shop, which burned down in 2009; the owner donated the lot to the city later.
