Debris removal is underway in Carroll County that will lead to a new bridge across Big Sand Creek.
The bridge, which is a project of the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT), will span the creek between Carrollton and North Carrollton.
Carroll County Board of Supervisors President Jim Neill said Tupelo-based Century Construction is doing the work.
He said the project is completely state-funded but did not know exactly how much it would cost.
The current bridge “has a lot of deteriorating metal on the columns,” Neill said. He said its replacement “is supposed to be a real nice bridge” with 6-foot-wide walking paths on each side.
He estimates the bridge will take more than a year to complete. Once it is done, construction on a grant-funded recreational area will begin, said North Carrollton Mayor Ken Strachan. “It really worked out really well because we’re going to be able to follow up right after they get through with construction of the bridge,” he said.
He said North Carrollton received a grant earlier this year of more than $350,000 from MDOT that will help add the recreation area near the Carroll County Tabernacle.
“Through this grant,” he said, “we’re going to be able to provide restrooms there for the park, and it’s also going to provide water for the Tabernacle.”
Other additions include lighting, a concrete pad, and sidewalks on the western side of George Street that will extend north to McCain Street.
“The addition of the new Big Sand Creek Park will increase tourism for this area and will be beneficial for generations to come,” Strachan said.
