A Greenwood man has been released from jail while another has been arrested in connection to a dramatic highway shooting that resulted in one death last month.
Cordarrius Harvey, 22, was released Thursday pending further investigation, said Police Chief Terrence Craft.
Harvey had been arrested in connection to a July 23 shooting on U.S. 82 that took the life of Terry Randle Jr. and wounded his older brother, Jacori Randle.
Terry Randle, 18, had graduated from Amanda Elzy High School in May and was two weeks away from leaving for college in Missouri on a football scholarship when he was killed.
The Randle brothers were driving east on U.S. 82 when their vehicle was bombarded by bullets from what police claim was a semi-automatic weapon fired from another vehicle on the highway. A witness at the scene claimed anywhere from 50 to 60 shots were fired.
Terry Randle, known to his family and friends as “T.J.,” was shot three times, including once in the head, and died two days later at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Jacori Randle, 23, was shot in the back and survived his injuries.
Harvey was picked up by police on Tuesday as part of their investigation into the case, but it is unclear whether he was ever formally charged. Dockets at both the Greenwood Police Department and the Leflore County Jail indicated he had been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated assault. Harvey’s father, James Harvey, also said police told his son that he had been charged when he was arrested. Craft said Friday, however, that Cordarrius Harvey may not have been charged after all.
Craft declined to reveal why Harvey was considered a suspect in the first place, citing the ongoing investigation.
James Harvey suggested it might have been a case of mistaken identity. His son goes by the nickname “Tre,” and James Harvey thinks police could have been looking for another person with the same name.
James Harvey said he was angry and frustrated over his son’s arrest and fears for the young man’s safety, even though he’s no longer in jail.
“My son is going to get killed,” he said.
Meanwhile, police have arrested another suspect in connection to the fatal shooting.
Zedric Davis
Zedric Davis, 27, 1109 Henderson St., has been charged with murder and aggravated assault. He was being held Friday at the Leflore County Jail. Bond has been set at $30,000 for the assault charge, while no bond had yet been set on the murder charge.
Davis joins Taighe Stewart as the prime suspects so far identified in the case.
Stewart, 29, the first person to be arrested, faces identical charges as Davis. Bond for Stewart is $500,000 on the murder charge and $50,000 on the aggravated assault charge. He remained in the jail as of Friday morning.
