Leflore County’s D’Rion Freeman tackled the punt returner from Gentry High School in the end zone after he attempted to run away from Tiger defenders to give the home team an 8-6 victory over the visiting Rams Friday night at Marcellus Singleton Stadium.
Leflore had punted the ball after a drive stalled. A Gentry player fielded the ball and ran backwards into the end zone. He was tackled by Freeman for a safety.
Dezmond Ray gave LC a 6-0 lead with a 12-yard run in the first frame. Gentry scored in the second to make it 6-6 at the half.
Ray finished with 100 yards on eight carries. Kyle Moore was 3-of-6 for 28 yards with an interception.
Dante Kelly led the Tiger defense with 10 tackles, two sacks, a fumble recovery and an interception.
Freeman finished with eight tackles and two sacks, and Taahir Banks had nine tackles. Donellius Griggs and Maurice Edwards had six tackles each. Griggs also had an interception. Akeviuhn Edwards had six tackles and forced a fumble.
Leflore (3-1) starts Region 4-2A play next week as it hosts O’Bannon.
-Greenwood 48, Lanier 27 — The visiting Bulldogs moved to 4-1 on the season with a victory over Lanier Friday night at North Jackson Field.
Greenwood hosts Clarksdale next week for homecoming.
-Delta Streets Academy 13, Benton Academy 2 — The Lions secured their first win of the season by knocking off the Raiders Friday night at Pillow’s Bill Davis Field.
Delta Streets (1-5) got two field goals and an extra point from kicker Christian Ledesma. He booted a 25-yard field goal in the first quarter. The Lions led 3-0 after one, 3-2 at the half and 3-2 after the third period.
Senior quarterback Anthony Armstead broke loose for an 80-yard run midway through the fourth period. Ledesma was true on the PAT.
Ledesma sealed the win with a 22-yard field goal later in the period.
Armstead finished with 132 yards on 12 carries. he also had four tackles on defense.
Daniel Crain had 47 yards on 10 tries and five tackles on defense. Draper Aldridge had 30 yards rushing on four carries, and led DSA with nine tackles and a fumble recovery.
Nick Leach had seven tackles and a fumble recovery, and Malique Davenport intercepted two passes.
DSA goes to Winona Christian next week.
