Leflore County continued its scoring outburst with 40 first-quarter points as the Tigers secured a 52-0 Region 4-2A homecoming win over visiting Riverside High School Friday night at Marcellus Singleton Stadium in Itta Bena.
Leflore (6-1 overall, 3-0 in region) has secured a spot in the North 2A playoffs with two regular-season games remaining.
The Tigers play at rival Humphreys County next week in a non-district game. They close out on Oct. 27 at Leland High School in a district contest.
Senior Dante Kelly started the barrage with a 66-yard run. Dezmond Ray had the 2-pointer. The next score came on a 66-yard pass from Kyle Moore to Ray, who also had the conversion to make it 16-0.
Moore then hit Tavion Dean from 40 yards out. D’Rion Freeman had the conversion. Steven Williams returned a fumble 30 yards for a TD, and Freeman had the 2-point run. The final score in the first was a 2-yard run by Moore. Ray had the conversion for a 40-0 advantage after one.
In the second period, D’Arnez Bell returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown. In the third frame, Moore hit Ray from 15 yards out to end the scoring.
Kelly had two carries for 111 yards, and Ray had three totes for 45 yards. Moore was 3-of-3 for 121 yards and three scores. Ray had two grabs for 81 yards, and Dean had one for 40 yards.
Taahir Banks led the defense with 11 tackles, and Kelly had 10 tackles. Maurice Edwards had nine tackles and a fumble recovery, and Freeman had eight stops.
Marcus Ross had seven tackles, and Donellius Griggs had five tackles.
-J.Z. George 24, Leland 14 — The Jaguars won one for teammate Dawson Mims as they beat the Cubs Friday night in Leland in a Region 4-2A contest.
Mims died in a car wreck Thursday morning.
Leland led 6-0 after the first period but J.Z. George took an 8-6 lead at the half.
The Jags led 16-14 after the third. They tacked on an insurance touchdown in the fourth.
JT Mann was 6-of-11 for 122 yards and two touchdowns. AJ Catron had one reception for 42 yards and a score, and Keiyhaun Wilks had two catches for 20 yards and a touchdown.
Rodney Catron had three tackles and returned an interception for a touchdown.
Jeremiah Williams had two 2-point conversions, and Jay James had one to round out the scoring.
Shamarion Applewhite had 50 yards rushing on seven carries, and James had 42 yards on seven tries.
Wilks finished with 13 tackles and two sacks, and Jeremy Rias had nine total tackles.
J.Z. George, 5-2 overall and 2-1 in district, hosts region foe O’Bannon next week in North Carrollton.
