J.Z. George’s football team overcame a tight first half as the Jaguars earned a 24-7 Region 4-2A win over visiting O’Bannon High School Friday night at Farris Jenkins Field in North Carrollton.
The Jaguars, who improve to 6-2 overall and finish district play at 3-1, close out the regular season Thursday as they visit Eupora High School.
J.Z. George’s defense came up big. Jeremiah Williams picked up a fumble and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown, and he also had a safety when he sacked the O’Bannon quarterback in the end zone.
Nehemiah Williams led the team in tackles with seven stops, and linebacker Jeremy Rias had six tackles. Keiyhaun Wilks tacked on five tackles.
Shamarion Applewhite led the offense with 62 yards rushing and a TD on eight carries. Jakolbie Cobbins had 45 yards on 10 totes.
JT Mann had a 20-yard touchdown pass to Wilks.
Mann and Cobbins had one 2-point conversion run each.
-Gentry 26, Greenwood 12 — The Bulldogs fell to 4-4 overall and 0-3 in Region 3-4A play with a loss to the Rams Friday night in Indianola.
Gentry led 6-0 after one, but a touchdown run by Javeon Smith tied the game at 6-6 at the half.
The Rams led 20-6 after the third. Bradley O’Bryant scored Greenwood’s second TD in the fourth quarter.
Greenwood hosts Yazoo City Thursday in its regular season finale needing a win to make the playoffs as the No. 4 seed.
Winona 41, Amanda Elzy 6 — The Panthers fell behind 28-0 at the half as the host Tigers cruised to a Region 3-3A win Friday night.
Winona led 35-6 after the third period.
Ely quarterback Jevarion Glover had a TD Pass. He was 8-of-24 for 133 yards with an interception.
Elzy closes out the regular season Thursday at home against Humphreys County.
-Humphreys County 42, Leflore County 22 — The Cowboys raced out to a 14-0 lead after the first and handed the Tigers just their second loss of the season.
For Leflore (6-2 overall), Kyle Moore scored on a 12-yard run, and Maurice Edwards had a four-yard run in the second period.
D’Arnez Bell scored from a yard out in the third. Leflore got a special teams safety.
Leflore plays at Leland Thursday night.
